Comment: It would be interesting to find out how you can present an agent (for example a photographer) that has taken thousands of pictures. Or an exhibition that has thousands of objects. How do you make all those objects/photos accessible and how do you help the user find that interesting thing amongst those? Another thing is when you have the relation sameAs, for example an object that has been registered in two different museums and that contains slightly different descriptions. Can you merge them and filter away the double information?

SOCH (Swedish Open Cultural Heritage)

Contact: daniel.langhammer@raa.se

Description: SOCH (Swedish Open Cultural Heritage) is a web service used to search and retrieve data from any organisation holding information or media relating to Swedish cultural heritage. The service aggregates information about ancient monuments, historic buildings, artefacts, photographs and images from over 50 Swedish cultural heritage institutions. The Swedish name for SOCH is “K-samsök”, which can be translated as “Cultural cross-search”.

An API-key is required to access the SOCH API. A temporary key is available for all Hack4Heritage paricipants:

User: hack4heritage

API-key: hack1234

SOCH functions as an exchange or aggregator, where data from many different local databases are made searchable and available to the public and to the research community. As a web service, it’s up to application developers to build the actual applications that exploit SOCH. One of the first applications built on the SOCH platform is a mobile phone application showing ancient monuments on a map layer. A number of museums are also building applications on SOCH in order to make more than just their own information available online: by creating links between related digital objects from different sources, SOCH enriches everybody’s data!

Comment: All metadata is licensed under CC0. Images etc. may have other more restrictive licences, which are given in each object’s metadata.

Description: The National Heritage Board’s database for archaeological sites and monuments provides information about ancient and historical remains located on both land and under water. You will find information about remains such as rune stones, rock carvings, cemeteries, mines, remains of crofts, places of execution, shipwrecks and much more. The chronological span is wide – from the Early Stone Age to the 20th century AD.

Data from Fornsök is available to download as data-dumps, as a WMS, and as part of the data indexed by SOCH (see seperate resource description for SOCH). The WMS service can be reached at: http://map.raa.se/deegree/services/wms_fmi_dold?version=1.1.1

In Fornsök you will find information about the types of remains and monuments, the location of the remains (plotted on the map) and find out about their level of protection. The data is in most cases accompanied by descriptions either in the text or as an attached pdf (derived from the old notebooks of the national monument surveyors). In some cases the information includes photographs, sketches and references to books and articles. The data mainly derives from field surveys undertaken throughout the country, as well as from archaeological excavations and field evaluations – both on land and under water.

Royal Armoury, Skokloster Castle and Hallwyl Museum

High resolution images from The Royal Armoury, Skokloster Castle and the Hallwyl Museum on Wikimedia Commons

Contact: fredrik.andersson@lsh.se

Description: The Royal Armoury, Skokloster Castle and the Hallwyl Museum aim to make their collections as accessible as possible, e.g. by only using free licenses for all images. The images found on Wikimedia Commons is the largest donation from a Swedish museum to Wikimedia Commons and one of the largest worldwide. But more important than the number of images is the way they are put in context. There is data about the depicted objects, about owners and usage of the objects and links to articles in Wikipedia. This information can be of interest to the general public as well as to researchers and pupils.

The images have been produced over a long period of time and were created for documenting the collections, planning exhibits and for marketing purposes. It covers everything from digitised glass negatives to completely new images. The information about the images comes from an extensive export from the collection database of the museums and many have a rich context telling the story of who owned or produced an object, in which historical event it featured, if it has been used in any exhibits or publications along with information such as material and dimensions of the depicted objects.

These images are either in the Public Domain due to their age or freely licensed. Images taken by the museums’ own photographers, from the 1990’s onwards are licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0. The photographer’s name is provided. CC0 is used when the museums own the copyright but refrain from claiming it, for example digitized glass negatives. Public Domain is used where copyright has expired, or when images depict art that is Public Domain.

Museum collections from the Royal Armoury, Skokloster Castle and the Hallwyl museum on Europeana

Contact: fredrik.andersson@lsh.se

Description: You can use one of the Europeana API:s to reach our collections with the following dataset identifier: 2064105

(providerName: MUSEU, edmDatasetName: ”2064105_The Royal Armoury_Skokloster_Hallwyl”).

The three museums, the Royal Armoury, Skokloster Castle and the Hallwyl Museum, constitute a government agency accountable to the Ministry of Culture. The museums base their work on a national cultural policy resolution enacted by the Swedish Parliament.

In the Europeana API you will find about 40 000 records from the three museums. Museum objects described with information about materials, techniques, dates, geographical places, historical events, classifications, related names, etc. In the API you will find links to images of the objects, or you could use images of the museum objects on Wikimedia Commons (see separate description about the Wikimedia Commons dataset). Please notice that Europeana only allows records that is provided with an image link. You could also use the K-samsök API (see separate dataset description) were the three museums provide about 80 000 records (for instance here you’ll find the complete library of Skokloster Castle which is not represented in Europeana yet).

The Royal Armoury (Swedish: Livrustkammaren) is a museum in the Royal Palace in Stockholm. It contains many artifacts of Swedish royal history (two main categories of objects is historical costumes and weapons). It is the oldest museum in Sweden, established in 1628 by King Gustavus Adolphus when he decided that his clothes from his campaign in Poland should be preserved for posterity.

Skokloster Castle is one of the mayor monuments from the period when Sweden was one of the most powerful countries in Europe. It’s built in the baroque style between 1654 and 1676. At Skokloster the Field Marshal and Count Carl Gustaf Wrangel (1613-1676) created a stately home of European caliber during the second half of the 17th century. The castle has remained amazingly untouched for more than 300 years, giving this building a unique authenticity. Wrangel and the following owners collected fine arts like armory, books, silver, glass, textiles and furniture. The collection consists of about 50 000 items in the 77 rooms in the Castle. Since 1967 Skokloster is stately owned and has been a national museum of cultural history since then.

The Hallwyl Museum is a Swedish national museum housed in the historical Hallwyl House in central Stockholm located on 4, Hamngatan facing Berzelii Park. The house once belonged to the Count and Countess von Hallwyl, but was donated to the Swedish state in 1920 on the condition that it would remain unchanged. In 1938, the museum was officially opened. The museum (in which the Hallwyl Collection is located) features preserved rooms from the late Victorian period in Sweden giving a glimpse into the lifestyles of the nobility in Stockholm at the time.
